Skiing

“It was really fun.  I want to go again.  My favorite part was going up the Magic Carpet and then skiing down the big hill.  I liked having Rachael, Uncle Terry, Aunt Beth & you there, mama.  I liked the skis and the boots, stepping into the skis was fun.  That’s everything, except I really want to go again.”

Above is Evan’s take on our day skiing this week.  Mom bid on and won 2 all day ski camp passes for Kid’s Skiing Camp at Whitetail Mountain in Mercersburg, PA.  Terry, Beth & I took Rachael & Evan up there on Tuesday.  The kids started camp first thing in the morning.  Rachael was a little freaked out by the boots, which immobilized her feet and calves, but Evan helped to calm her down and get her in gear to go skiing.*

After the kids were settled in at Kids Camp, us grown-ups went skiing ourselves.  I hadn’t been skiing since around the time I got pregnant with Evan.   I felt a bit rusty at first, but quickly got into the groove of skiing.  It’s like riding a bike, I guess…muscle memory takes over.  As Terry says “Look down the mountain, smile, and you’ll have a great time.”  Sounds simple, but it works.  It was great to spend the day skiing with Beth & Terry, considering we all spent our childhood winters doing the same.  Beth & Terry are much more experienced skiers than I am, but they spent the day skiing slopes that made me comfortable.

I skied with my camera under my coat, so I was able to take some pics as the day progressed.  A couple of times I went near to where the kids were, but out of their immediate sight and I got some great shots when they didn’t even know I was watching.

It was a great day and I can’t wait to do it again.  I can’t let five years pass again without skiing…so much fun.

* Evan often tries to make Rachael more comfortable with things that scare her.  He can get her to try things that she otherwise refuses to even consider.  Like last week she was afraid to go through a cave at a nearby nature center but he explained to her how he copes with things when he’s a little bit afraid, and he held her hand, and eventually she went through the cave with him.  I love to see this tender side of him.
